Bikes on Buses

- Two-wheeled bikes only.
- No motorized bikes.
- Cyclists MUST load and unload their own bike. For safety reasons, the bus driver cannot assist in loading or unloading a bike.
- No child carrier seats or tandem bikes permitted
- Bikes cannot be locked while on the bike rack
- Customers use the PVTA racks at their own risk. PVTA assumes no responsibility for bikes that are lost, stolen, damaged or left on racks.
- Never step onto the street side of the bus when loading or unloading your bike. The bus operator may not see you if you approach and load from the left side of the bus.
- Remember to let the bus operator know when you plan to load or unload your bike.
- Be ready at the bus stop. If you plan to remove anything from your bike, do so before the bus arrives at the stop.
- Load your bike as quickly as possible.
- Be considerate of the passengers on board.
- Do not bring your bike inside the bus if the rack is full. Only folding bikes, in the folded position, are allowed on a bus.
- Racks are available during hours of operation on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Remove all loose items such as water bottles, air pumps, flags, bags, etc. before loading.
- Always load and unload bike from the curbside, never from the traffic lane.
- After the bus comes to a complete stop and you are sure that the bus driver sees you, move to the bike rack located on the front of the bus.
- REMEMBER, make eye contact with driver!
- Squeeze up on the release handle that is located in the middle of the rack and lower the rack from its upright position.
- Lift the bike onto the rack, the bike must be positioned using the available wheel slot closest to the bus, wheel slots are clearly labeled for front and back tires.
- Raise the support arm over the top of your bike’s front tire so the hook rests next to the brakes.
- DO NOT LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE RACK.
- Board the bus and pay your fare.
- As the bus approaches your stop, inform the driver that you will be unloading your bike. Use the front door to exit the bus. Unload your bike from the curb-side only.
- Raise the support arm off the front tire and fold it down to its original position. Lift the bike off the rack.
- If the rack is empty, fold the rack into the upright position by squeezing the release handle.
- Step away from the bus to the curb with your bike. Wait until the bus pulls away. Never proceed directly in front of the bus into traffic.
E Bike/ Electric Scooter Personal Electric vehicle (PEV) policy
Acceptable PEVs include E Scooters and E Bicycles, PEVS that are not acceptable aboard PVTA vehicles include Unicycles, Onewheels, Hoverboards, and similar vehicles including electric skateboards and longboards.
Electric Bikes and Scooters will be allowed subject to the following conditions.
- Charging is Prohibited.
Charging any PEV; plugging a PEV of any type into an electrical outlet or connecting a PEV to any charging device in any PVTA facility or on any PVTA vehicle is prohibited. - Operating electric bikes or scooters anywhere on PVTA property is Prohibited.
Operating, riding, sitting, or standing on or astride a PEV or placing a PEV under power (i.e., turning it on) for any reason in any PVTA facility, or vehicle is prohibited. - Electric bikes and Scooters that are not foldable may not be placed in any PVTA vehicle.
- You are Allowed to bring acceptable bikes and scooters into public areas of PVTA’s facilities and onboard vehicles subject to the following conditions;
- Only foldable electric bikes or scooters that can be stored between or under seats may be brought onboard. They must not block aisles or be stored on other seats and should not prevent other passengers from riding comfortably.
- You must comply with reasonable requests from the driver or PVTA staff to relocate your electric bike or scooter to a more suitable spot. It should always be stored safely behind the yellow safety lines and out of the aisles.
- The electric bike or scooter must not obstruct the movement of passengers, PVTA employees, contractors, or law enforcement personnel. Ensure that doors, aisles, seats, and emergency equipment remain clear.
- Devices must be folded and ready to store before boarding.
- The electric bike or scooter must remain in its compact, latched position at all times.
- You may not place the electric bike or scooter in a location that blocks any right-of-way, signage, or safety mechanism.
- Electric bikes or scooters must remain under your control and cannot be left unattended. Storing them on PVTA property is not permitted.
- The device must not obstruct or impede customers or PVTA employees with disabilities, including those using ADA mobility devices.
- The device must be "walked" onto the bus or into any facility; riding is not permitted.
- Devices must remain powered off during transport.
- Electric bikes or scooters must not exceed 50 pounds in weight.
- Electric bikes must fit securely and safely in the bike rack.
- Drivers are not allowed to assist with stowing bikes in the bike rack.
- Drivers are not permitted to assist with stowing foldable electric bikes or scooters onboard.
- Devices that cannot be quickly stored on the bike rack or onboard (at the driver’s discretion) will not be allowed.
- PEVs must use UL-certified batteries that are undamaged and free from leaks or defects.
- If your device creates a safety hazard, you may face disciplinary action or other remediation.
PEVs that are the property of a shared or rented PEV provider (e.g., Valley Bike, etc.) are not allowed on board PVTA vehicles or in PVTA facilities.
PEVs that do not fit and or cannot be properly secured on the bike rack will not be allowed and may not be brought onboard unless they meet all the conditions outlined above.
These rules do not apply to mobility devices as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). PVTA employees and customers should always give priority to people with disabilities.
